Physician Assistant Program in New Jersey

In NJ there are two colleges offering NJ PA programs and they are University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Piscataway, NJ and Seton Hall University, School of Health and Medical sciences, South Orange, NJ.
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Physician Assistant Program
The UMDNJ PA Program is offered in the campus of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The college is offering PA program since 1975 and full accreditation to the program is granted by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).
UMDNJ Physician Assistant Program has duration of 3 years.
In the present day, the enrollment to the program has reached over 100 students, 14 faculty and 4 staff members
PA Program Route
The enrolment to the PA program can be carried out by following two routes:
- Earn bachelor’s degree and complete college mandated prerequisite courses and get direct entry to the program.
- Students not possessing Bachelor’s degree can opt for the articulated BA/MS program through affiliated universities of the college.
The program constitutes both didactic and clinical phase, where in didactic classroom instructions lays the foundation for the clinical hands-on experience that include extensive clinical training covering fields of surgical, ambulatory, sub specialties, inpatient medicine, acute care and primary cares. The students have the option to complete their clinical rotation inside or outside the United states.
PA Certification and Licensure
The completion of the program, awards a Master’s Degree and eligibility to sit for the National Physical Assistant Certification Exam (PANCE). The certification also paves the way for the PA practice License.
Seton Hall University, School of Health and Medical sciences
Seton Hall University, School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHU-SHMS) is located at South Orange, NJ. The college started offering PA Program in March 2001 because, since 1992, when the state of NJ started licensing PAs and the demand for PAs surpassed the actual graduates. In order to meet the growing demands, SHMS opened its door for PA students and started offering M.S. in Physician Assistant program. In 2004, the college graduated its first PA.
The Master’s PA Program studies aims to provide the required knowledge and judgments essential for highly skilled clinicians practicing in a variety of health care settings including medical and surgical.
Accreditation and Certification
The program subsequently met the accreditation requirements and was accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARCE-PA) and the successful completion of the program allows students to appear in the national physical assistant certification exam (PANCE) for PA Certification and PA Licensure.
The Master of Science in Physician Assistant (M.S.P.A.) program of the SHU offers three-year professional program of 96 credits. The intensive clinical rotation of the college has duration of 60 weeks. In the first semester study year of the program, the students get opportunity for clinical hands-on experience. But, actual intensive clinical training continues in the second year of study and continues in 3rd and final year.
