If you are residing in the state of Rhode Island and wishing to enter primary care field completing Physician assistant Programs in Rhode Island then, you must remember that there is no college or university in the state of RI that offers Physician assistant Programs in Rhode Island.

Any health care professionals aiming to practice as a Physician assistant in the state of Rhode Island must apply to the Board of Physician Assistants (RI Department of Health), meet Board’s mandated licensing requirements as prescribed in the two sets of state rules. The first sets of rules are laws that permit PAs too practice in the state, whereas the Department of Health sets the regulations that regulate day by day practice. PAs in RI violating Statues may face the consequence of arrest, trial, and jail, and regulations violation may lead to suspension or the revoking of a PAs license.

RI License Requirements

In RI, the eligibility to earn the PA practice license can be gained by completing Physician assistant Programs in Rhode Island Certified by the Rhode Island Academy of Physician Assistant’s Committee on Allied Health, Education, and Accreditation (CAHEA) or Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or its successor.   

In addition, there are also other requirements including, the Applicant must bear sound character and reputation, must have passed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or any board approved national certifying exam. The applicant is also required to submit a completed Application, along with the required fee of $90.00.

The responsibility to issue the PA License is vested on the RI Board of Physician Assistants (RI Department of Health).

The Board of Physician Assistants (RI Department of Health)

The Board of Physicians Assistants was established in 1976 and is a regulating agency for carrying out the roles, as authorized by the Department of Health to protect the public by issuing a license, and carry over disciplinary process against the health care professionals.  The Board also has the responsibility to approve Physician assistant Programs in Rhode Island along with additional responsibilities, such as licensing, practice of PAs, Application process and health care agencies.

The licensing permits PAs to practice under the supervision of physician and he/she is counted as the agent of the Physician for carrying out a variety of duties as assigned by the physician. IN RI, PAs are also allowed to write full prescriptions and medical orders.

Continuing medical education

The Licensed PAs are required to complete ten (10) hours of approved continuing medical education annually that begins the 1st September and continues till 31st August. The licensure will not be renewed if the required Continuing medical education is not completed or the evidence of the completion of the education is not submitted by a PA.  

Currently, there are over 130 accredited PA programs and the accreditation to the program is offered by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The program s offered by various colleges and universities and has a length of around 26 months depending upon the program provider’s course curriculum. They are trained in a medical model because they perform many duties traditionally executed by the physicians including primary cares, medical and surgical.
